Takahiro Izumikawa’s music is a cross-cultural examination, born out of his experiences living and working in both Japan and the United States. The tracks on his album balance between its traditional Japanese melodies with its hip hop, R&B, and jazz elements.The title track of his latest album “Life is Your Thoughts” is particularly poignant. Jermaine Holmes (vocalist forD’Angelo and Erykah Badu) is featured on it, and It’s based on the 10th century Japanese fictional prose narrative “Princess Kaguya”, which ends with the princess tearfully leaving earth to return to her home on the moon. The song plays out a conversation between the English rapand the Japanese lyrics, taken directly from poems in the original text.

 

 

泉川の音楽スタイルは、日本とアメリカの文化のクロスオーバー。雅楽、邦楽の日本独特のメロディにヒップホップ、R&Bのリズムとジャズのハーモニーをミックスしたスタイルで、叙情的で感情的な音楽が特徴である。特に最新アルバムのタイトルトラックの”Life is Your Thoughts”では、ディアンジェロ、エリカバドゥのバンドでお馴染みのJermaine Holmesをフィーチャーして竹取物語を題材に、日本、アメリカ両方の文化的解釈で歌詞、メロディを制作。後半は本編の実際の帝とカグヤ姫の和歌のやり取りを歌詞として取り入れ歌をサンプリング。英詞とラップと和歌がリンクした内容になっている。
